Paris in one day

Paris in one day

Many people visit Paris each year. I bet you either visited Paris or are thinking of visiting. And these kind of city trips are a lot of fun (one of my favourite kind of holidays actually), but they can also be quite tiring. Therefore, more and more, people visit cities just one day. I did so as well, two years ago, when I was on holiday with friends in France. We decided to experience Paris in one day. Was it doable? Yes. Would I reccomend it? Not necessarily.

Are you able to see all the touristic highlights in one day?
When you are going to Paris for the fist time I can imagine you want to see (at least some) of the famous landmarks. The Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, La basilique du Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame de Paris, Montmartre, you name it. I’ve been to Paris a few times by now already, but when I went two years ago with friends some of them had never been there before. So of course we decided to visit some of them. In one day we managed to see all the places I mentioned before (and some more of course).

Apart from just seeing The Eiffel Tower, you might also want to go up. Or go inside the Notre Dame. Unfortunately, the lines are endless for this. Sometimes you are able to buy “skip the line” tickets beforehand online. If you don’t really plan ahead that far or forgot about them, you will be in line for a long time before you are able to enter. Especially when you have just one day in Paris it feels like a waste of time. Two years ago we only went up at the Arc de Triomphe. We were quite lucky to have our student cards with us which meant we were able to go up for free and when we asked one of the security guards, he allowed us to skip the line since we didn’t have to buy a ticket. If you are still a student when visiting Paris it is worth a try 😉

What is the best way to see as much as possible of Paris in one day?
Walk. It’s as simple as that. Don’t take the underground all the time. Of course, you’ll have to take it sometimes because otherwise you simply can’t cover all distances. But for example when you visit The Eiffel Tower, walk around the area for a little while. We encountered a lovely market which we wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. It’s the easy way out to take the underground all the time, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it.

Would I recommend visiting Paris for just one day?
If you have more time, take it. But I guess that is the rule for almost every city trip to a large city like Paris. But if you simply don’t have the time, for whatever reason, it is doable to see Paris in a day.

Do any of you have any tips when you visit a large city like Paris for just one day?

  • Oh Paris, yes it is doable in a day – but put on your walking shoes 🙂 What we always do when citytripping, is start extra early and walk till we’ve seen everything and then totally exhausted take public transport to go home.

  • You are right Jasmine! Walking shoes are very important for a day of citytripping. Walking is the best way to see and experience a lot!
